CNN —Novak Djokovic continued his pursuit of a record-breaking 25th grand slam title with victory against Taylor Fritz in the Australian Open quarterfinals. Remarkably, Djokovic is now on a 33-match winning streak in Melbourne and remains on course to win an 11th Australian Open crown. Fritz, meanwhile – playing in his third grand slam quarterfinal and first at the Australian Open – engineered two set points at 6-5 only for the world No. After taking the first set in a tie break, Djokovic was immediately broken and trailed for the remainder of the second set as Fritz leveled the match. One daunting statistic for his next opponent: Djokovic has never lost any of his 10 previous semifinals at the Australian Open.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Novak Djokovic held off Taylor Fritz 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 in 3 3/4 hours to reach the Australian Open semifinals for the 11th time on Tuesday. After Fritz held in the 11th game, Djokovic was agitated and gesturing to get the attention of his support team, calling for salts. After all that resistance, though, Fritz was broken in the second game of the third set when Djokovic converted his 16th chance. He hit back immediately, converting his second break point with a forehand that clipped the net and dropped for a winner. Djokovic had beaten Fritz in straight sets in all but one of their previous eight encounters, including last year's U.S. Open quarterfinals.

CNN —Novak Djokovic has never been afraid to do things differently, so his latest revelation should hardly come as much of a surprise. “There is one particular tree that I have been having a special relationship with for the last 15 years,” Djokovic told reporters earlier this week, when asked about a tree locals have seen him meditating by. “That particular tree, I cannot reveal which one, I’ll try to keep it discreet for myself when I’m there to have my own time. But his love for trees – well, one tree in particular – had somehow gone under the radar until now. The best performance I had during this tournament,” said Djokovic in his post-match interview on court.

First of all, there's no such thing as a “game clock” in tennis, in general, and no such thing as “too late” at the Australian Open and U.S. Open, in particular. … I haven’t been able to sit through one,” two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka said. The women's and men's professional tours announced just before the start of the Australian Open that they're instituting new rules this month to try to cut back on play after midnight. One problem: Those rules apply only to events run by the WTA and ATP — not Grand Slam tournaments. WHEN DOES MEDVEDEV PLAY NEXT?

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka reached the fourth round of the Australian Open on Friday with a 6-0, 6-0 demolition of Lesia Tsurenko. “Last year, Iga (Swiatek) won so many sets 6-0 and this is one of the goals, to try to get closer to her,” Sabalenka joked. The pair did not shake hands — as is the convention for Ukrainian players against opponents from Russia or Belarus — but Tsurenko congratulated Sabalenka verbally. Sabalenka will play Amanda Anisimova, who continued her comeback with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Paula Badosa. 4 Jannik Sinner moved into the fourth round without losing a set, thanks to a dominant 6-0, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Sebastian Baez.

Djokovic, Norrie and Fruhvirtova were not prepared to blame the ever-changing types of tennis balls used year-round at the sport's highest levels, but they weren't necessarily ready to absolve that issue completely, either. He said when the ATP asks male players at the end of each season what they think can be improved about the sport, he always mentions the fluctuations among the fuzzy tennis balls. Ten brands of tennis balls — and 19 distinct types — were used across the WTA in 2023. "It does change week by week." One significant difference between tennis and some other sports is that surfaces change, prompting ball changes.

CNN —It looked on paper to be an easy start to Novak Djokovic’s Australian Open campaign, but the 24-time grand slam champion was given a scare by Croatian youngster Dino Prizmic in a thrilling first round encounter on Sunday. The 18-year-old impressed during his debut in a grand slam main draw. However, the effort it took to temporarily take the lead against the Serb looked to take its toll as Prizmic’s level began to drop as the match wore on. Djokovic, who had picked up a minor injury ahead of this year’s Australian Open, began to click into gear and recovered to win the third set. “He deserves every applause, every credit he got tonight,” Djokovic added.

CNN —About this time last year, Ben Shelton was an up-and-coming tennis player taking his first-ever trip outside the United States. It figures, then, that Shelton enters his second full season as a professional tennis player with weighty expectations. “There’s not one path for everybody, and I don’t think that my path is perfect, but it really worked for me,” says Shelton. Shelton did, however, recall the unreturnable serve he hit at 4-5, 30-40 down in the fifth set. Shelton left last year’s Australian Open, his first trip abroad, as a quarterfinalist after succumbing to his friend and fellow American Tommy Paul. It’s only over the past seven or so months that the Carota Boys’ love for Sinner has really blossomed, endearing themselves to the tennis public in the process. Filed: November 29, 2022, 11.00 a.m. GMTThe year was filled with sporting excellence, broken records and newly-crowned champions, and Reuters photographers were present to document every major twist and turn. In soccer, the Women’s World Cup shattered several attendance and viewership records, but Spain’s win was overshadowed by a sexism storm that attracted global headlines. Manchester City won their first-ever Champions League trophy en route to the treble and Napoli lifted their first Serie A title in 33 years. Novak Djokovic’s quest to establish himself as the greatest-ever men’s tennis player was the highlight of the tennis season. He won three major titles, although he ultimately lost the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz.

That he lost one of his matches after having three match points was incredulous, given there is no one more adept at closing out a match than the world No.1. He was beaten in both the singles and doubles in Malaga, Spain as Italy beat Serbia 2-1 to set up a Davis Cup final against Australia on Sunday. “Obviously playing doubles in the decider of a Davis Cup tie is not easy. It was the Serb’s first singles defeat in the Davis Cup since 2011, when he was forced to retire injured against Argentina’s Juan Martin del Potro. “For me personally it’s a huge disappointment, because I take the responsibility, obviously having three match points, being so close to winning it,” said Djokovic, per the Davis Cup website.

The 36-year-old world number one, looking to complete a remarkable year by helping his country win the Davis Cup for the second time, outclassed Norrie to become his country's most successful Davis Cup player. Serbia will face Italy on Saturday after Jannik Sinner inspired his team to a comeback win over the Netherlands, the world number four winning his singles and a decisive doubles . But world number 55 Kecmanovic produced a brilliant performance to beat Draper 7-6(2) 7-6(6) in a fierce battle. That never looked likely, however, as Djokovic, who won three of the year's four Grand Slam titles and last week's ATP Finals for a record seventh time, dissected the world number 18. Earlier, in the Martin Carpena Arena which has seen big crowds for Final Eight, Italy kept alive their hopes of a first Davis Cup title since 1976.
